Time has passed since that child who came to Jesus with his 5 loaves and 2 fish. Also from the phrase “Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these or even more so since those days when our Lord, the creator of the Universe, would lay in a humble manger as a helpless child, not considering being of the same substance as the Father as something to be held onto and coming to this world, a small fragment of his creation, like that slain lamb, prepared already since before the Foundation of the World. But then and in the manger, a child at the End.
And if Childhood has such an impact and value in Scripture, it is no wonder then that the Church also dedicates not only its time, efforts and resources to children’s ministry, it is because it should. The well-known portion of the Shema Judaica in Deuteronomy 6 speaks of the urgent need for children’s instruction, so that the law, the moral character of God, is not only in our hearts, but also in the hearts of our children.
Our goal should be to be able to say of our adults in a few years:
“And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 3:15 NIV
That is why the Antorcha de Salvación Baptist Church places a strong emphasis on bringing the Gospel to children. Evidence of this has been the development of a recurring evangelistic program at the mission in Las Tosas. A group of teachers and local missionaries have led a program designed with simple Bible stories so that children of different ages can understand the glorious message of the Gospel. Something that moves them is also seeing so many family members arrive and listen to the message, accompanying the children. “I’ve served the Lord in children’s ministry for several years. I’m passionate about this service!” one teacher tells us. “And something we always see with great joy is that, perhaps like no other ministry with age groups, children are able to involve the rest of the family in their activities.”
Aware of the Lord’s command to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 NIV), and with hope in the power of the Gospel, these teachers travel miles to reach children with the Gospel message.
May the truth be rooted in the minds and hearts of the Church, who are also our children today. From there, from that reason, comes our work, our love, our service, our goal.
