Nestled in the historic Valley of the Sugar Mills, the Los Pinos Nuevos church in Trinidad, Cuba, is experiencing a pivotal moment in its organizational development. With a membership exceeding two hundred—comprising 128 adults, 19 youth, and 65 children—the congregation has become a vibrant source of community life.
However, the success of this growth brings a logistical dilemma: the current sanctuary holds only 90 people, a space that is already too cramped to accommodate the entire faith family in a single service. The response to this limitation is not stagnation, but multiplication. Four church cell groups are maturing and preparing to multiply, paving the way for a key transition in September: the church will organize itself into “two wings”—one meeting in the central sanctuary and the other operating from homes, taking the Gospel directly into the neighborhoods.
With 128 adults, 19 youth, and 65 children, the congregation is preparing for a significant leap in its expansion, tackling the space challenge while envisioning new church plants within the city and beyond.
This strategy is not improvised. Los Pinos Nuevos already maintains a network of seven active missions covering various local areas—Feneta, San Pedro, El Maizal, Topes de Collantes, Pitajones, Playa La Boca, and a cell group in the La Purísima neighborhood—as well as an affiliated church in the municipality of Condado. These outposts serve not only as preaching points but also as incubators for future leaders.
The church leadership looks beyond the immediate horizon. With their sights set on the Great Commission, they have devised an ambitious plan: to plant a second church on the outskirts of Trinidad and, subsequently—once missionary teams are trained—to send workers to other locations that are already the subject of prayer. “We are praying about various locations, waiting for God to open the door for us,” the pastors remark. The vision centers on a brother currently training in the Pastoral Residency—a program that hosts five trainees and offers leadership training—who, together with a group of members from the mother church, the Playa La Boca mission, and the La Purísima small group, will form the founding team for the new congregation.
The pastoral residency is the heart of the training effort. It is a place where future pastors are trained, mission courses prepare teams, and small-group leaders are raised up and equipped. The church recognizes that expansion requires not only enthusiasm but also organizational and spiritual capacity.
To make the second church a reality, the congregation has a tangible goal: purchasing a house on the outskirts of the city to serve as a new meeting place. They are therefore appealing for the cooperation, prayers, and support of everyone who shares this vision.
Despite the challenges, the church is a mosaic of joy. The accompanying photos show baptisms in crystal-clear waters, vibrant worship services, intergenerational fellowship, and the smiles of children and seniors who have found a family at Los Pinos Nuevos. The church is growing not only in numbers but also in depth, anchored in prayer and service.
